When are people going to finally stand up to schools that enforce bad rules like the too skimpy prom dress that shows as much skin as you'd see at a girls volleyball practice.
Its not like the school can fall back on the whole "its distracting attire" claim - this is for the prom. Girls are trying to get attention with their dresses.

A 14-year-old girl got expelled from school for having a butter knife in her backpack. How reasonable.
She ran out of the house to meet the bus while making a sandwich, when she realized she had the knife. She put it in her bookbag, then she put it in her locker at Goose Creek High school. She forgot it was there until a few weeks later when the knife fell out of her overstuffed locker.

10 years in juvi detention and a permanent record as a sex offender - all for slapping a girls ass in school. Yep, that sounds reasonable

Can't Say Vagina
A public high school suspended 3 girls for saying 'vagina' - during the Vagina Monologues.
The excerpt from "Monologues" was read Friday night, among various readings at an event sponsored by the literary magazine at John Jay High School in Cross River, a New York City suburb. Among the other readings was a student's original work and the football coach quoting Shakespeare.
The girls took turns reading the excerpt until they came to the word, then said it together.
Don't Tell The Teacher She's Sexy
A 10 year old boy was suspended for 2 days after telling his teacher she was sexy and asking for a hug.
Puking On The Teacher
A kid up in the Kansas City area got himself in trouble for
vomiting on his Spanish teacher the last day of school. The kid claims it was stress, but he's being punished like it was intentional.
Hugging Draws Detention
So Oregon has a
ban on hugging in schools. Nice rule. I guess the next time that the girls volleyball team wins a home game, they are all going to get detention for hugging on the floor in celebration.
Or even better, if a student would commit suicide or die in a car crash, how many others would get detention for the hugfest that would ensue the next day at school as the kids deal with their grief.
Its just another in a long line of bad rules made by power-mad school administrators.

suspended for doing cartwheels and handstands during lunch/recess. The school claims they are too 'dangerous'.
Kids and 'Porn'
At least the crazy punishments for kids isn't limited to just the USA. 3 kids were
punished for 'pornography' after being caught drawing a stick figure with boobs and a penis. Of course, it doesn't matter if the kids actually drew the picture or not (the school isn't sure, and the kids aren't talking), they were just gonna punish them anyway:
"The teacher said that even if he hadn't drawn it, he'd 'got pleasure from the picture and that's sick'," said Mathews.
What a lovely attitude.
Cake Or Death?
I never had teachers like this: Students in Zimbabwea who got in trouble in class were given the option of being caned or
sucking her breasts as punishment. Tough choice eh? It reminds me of Eddie Izzard's bit about what the Inquisition would have been like had it been run by the Church of England - cake or death?
Schools Gone Crazy
A high school student was
suspended for running a write-in campaign for class vice-president. Seems he didn't meet the new GPA requirement to be an official candidate, and didn't like the rule, so he put up some posters and launched his campaign.
But the school didn't stop there, 6 more students were suspended over the episode. Their crime - insubordination - for wearing little stickers on their shirts in support of the then-suspended write-in candidate.

Unpopular Speech At Schools
A middle school student who was
suspended for wearing a 'Barbie is a Lesbian' t-shirt by her school has just received a nice fat $30,000 check from said school after she sued them.
Natalie Young, now 15 and in high school, wore the shirt to middle school in April 2002, leading school officials to send her home for the day despite the absence of any official dress code.
Always good to see a kid fight back. I'm not a big proponent of using the legal system to fight this battle, but if its necessary to get results in individual cases I can live with it.

Bang Bang
A 10 year old boy
gets suspended for pointing his finger like a gun and saying BANG twice. The school claims its not just this one instance that got him the suspension - apparently he said something about killing another student last fall. But, its quite revealing that the threat didn't get him thrown out of school (which would have been appropriate), but instead the stupid little finger gun.
Cut The Crap
A 12 year old student was
expelled from school for taking scissors to a sewing class in school.
Jacob told the IndyChannel.com the teacher had told the pupils to put all their supplies on the table.
He said: "I put the scissors on the desk and she just freaked out."
Jacob's mother, Chrystal, said her son had hurt his hands while using a school set of scissors so she gave him a pair from home.
Suspended For Smelling
A 16-year old in Georgia got
suspended from school because a drug dog indicated his backpack smelled like marijuana and cocaine.
When police searched Renard's bag, they found some books and papers, all the normal stuff a kid who goes to school would have. They did not find any drugs but suspended Renard and charged him with passive participation. The school calls it part of its zero-tolerance policy. "Students and parents need to understand that," said school board spokesman James Harvey.
Understand what? That you'll suspend a kid because he smells like something? They called him a 'passive participant' - but there's no talk of how passive it may have been. Could he have simply tossed his backpack into a classroom corner where somebody elses backpack was that actually had drugs in it, and the smell attached to his bag that way?
This is just so crazy it makes me mad. I almost hope that something like this happens to my daughter just so I can make fools out of the school board and administrators.
Baby Steps
A
3rd grader who was suspended for bringing a tiny GI Joe gun (the little 1/2 inch things) has been reinstated by the school board. While doing the right thing in this case, they still won't admit there's a problem with their rules and the way they are enforced:
"Keep in mind that we're trying to run safe schools," Shiver said. "Now sometimes the public does not like what we do to make schools secure, but at the same time we have to make sure that the children are protected."
Its pretty clear to me, and probably all of you, that a policy banning 1/2 inch plastic action figure guns isn't doint a damn thing to
"make sure that the children are protected".
Over the past 2 years of really paying attention to zero tolerance policies at schools, it does appear to me that the situation is improving slightly for students. Principals and teachers tend to still go overboard in an attempt to comply with the letter of the rules, but school boards are more often overturning their decisions.
Punishing Kids

Local 6 News has learned that the case may not have been an isolated incident, according to reporter Wendy Saltzman.
Saltzman said that another child told his mother that a different boy at the school had been punished in the exact same way.
"I think this is a practice that happened more than once, by more than one teacher to more than one student," Fairlamb said.

New Winter Zero Tolerance Rules
In Seattle, some schools have
prohibited kids from making and throwing snowballs, and in some instances - they aren't even allowed to touch the snow. Also, a kid was
suspended for 5 days after bringing Gas-X to school.
The district's superintendent, Sue Cleveland, says the drug might seem innocuous, but there are dangers of allowing students to carry around their own medication.

Politics In Schools
A public school's teachers and administration refuse to protect a kid from threats of violence and physical intimidation
because they don't like his politics. Now, his principal and the campus security officer have advised him to stay home for a few days. I guess the ida of having the kids doing the threatening stay home a few days (suspension) hasn't popped into their heads yet. Suprising, considering their apparently isn't much in there getting in the way.
Kids Fight Back
17 of the kids at Goose Creek, South Carolina, are
suing the school principal and superintendant along with the police chief and an officer in connection with the morning 'drug' raid that turned up no drugs. You'll probably remember this case is where a group of officers raided the school with drug dogs and weapons drawn and had kids layed out on the school's hallways while they searched them.
Creative Writing Gone Bad
11-year-old gets suspended from school for 35 days
for a creative writing project that the principal deemed 'threatening'.
Dylan started writing his novel, titled "Costume Party," on Oct. 1, and in two days had polished off 10 chapters. Students in his English class urged him to read some of it aloud on Oct. 6, and Dylan said that even his English teacher "didn't have a problem with it."
The story describes a boy named Dylan at H.B.T. Middle School "who adored his teachers like he enjoyed honey," but who was "bullied and pushed around by everyone bad enough to be evil."
The Dylan in the story decides to incorporate plots from horror movies into a scheme for revenge. As in the "Halloween" movies, the killer dons a plain white mask, knives and bullets fly at unsuspecting targets, and bodies are found in pools of blood.
Dylan said that other than sharing his name, he had nothing in common with the main character of his novel. "He just has my name - there's nothing about him that's like me at all," Dylan said. "I just thought it would be neat to take one of these movies and change the setting."
Teacher: My Kids Are Evil
What is it with music teachers and threatening their students? Back in 2002 a music teacher
threatened her class with a gun if they didn't play their instruments corrently. And now today I see a recent story of a music teacher who was accused of threatening her elementary school class with a gun is now
claiming that the kids made up the story to frame her. When asked why they would do such a thing she said,
"Evil, I guess."

7-year-old boy was punished for using the word 'GAY' in school.
Second-grader Marcus McLaurin was waiting for recess Nov. 11 at Ernest Gaullet Elementary School when a classmate asked about Marcus' mother and father, the ACLU said in a complaint.
Marcus responded he had two mothers because his mother is gay. When the other child asked for explanation, Marcus told him: "Gay is when a girl likes another girl," according to the complaint. A teacher who overheard the remark told the kid that 'gay' was a bad word and sent him to the principal's office where he was told that he couldn't use the word 'gay' in school.
His punishment? To come to school early and write
"I will never use the word 'gay' in school again." On the classroom blackboard. After being told not to use the word 'gay' in school again. I'm dumbfounded.
