A SOLID START FOR TRYON in the 1st round of the Buick Open. 3 birdies against only one bogey and 26 putts leaves Ty in a tie for 45th place with a 2 under 70 after day 1. With an early tee time tomorrow, he should be able to take advantage of some good weather and post another solid score.

THE DALLAS MORNING NEWS ASKS AN INTESTING question today - Where are the young guns on the PGA Tour. At the beginning of the year there was much media hype over all the good young talent on the tour, yet its the old farts that keep making news. Whatever happened to Sergio Garcia, Ty Tryon, David Gossett and Luke Donald, some of the youngsters who were supposed to take the tour by storm? They appear to be old news. The easy answer is that young kids never do consistently well on the PGA Tour. The exceptions being Tiger and Jack Nicklaus and maybe a handful of other players over the past 40 years. Expecting all the young kids on tour to win multiple times just isn't realistic. Then there's this: Of the top 11 players on the money list, four are at least 40. Tiger Woods, at 27, may be the world's best player. May be the world's best player? May? There's no may about it. Who the heck would he give that title to otherwise? One of these beloved 40 somethings?

THIS ONE WILL HURT MORE THAN some of Ty's other missed cuts. After the slow start yesterday, Tryon got himself to 4 under on the day (thru 13 holes) and Even for the event - right on the cut line. From that point on, everything went poorly. The cut line moved to 1 under, and Ty managed a bogey and two doubles to fall completely out of the chance for making the cut. The one bright spot - he didn't get beat by club pro Suzy Whaley (75-58)

A SLOW START FOR TY AT THE Greater Hartford Open. Only 1 birdie on the day (when you only hit 8 greens, its tough to score), against 3 bogies and a double left Tryon with an opening 74, and alot of work to do on Friday morning to make the cut. Despite his difficulties, he did manage to accomplish the really important stuff - like beating Suzy Whaley (75). Some of the players who didn't manage to beat the girl include: Matt Kuchar (77) and David Duval (83). Duval may very well be the new Ian Baker-Finch.

THE WEEKEND ROUNDS AT THE BC OPEN turned out to be disappointing for Tryon. He could never string together any birdies like he had on Thursday and Friday and ended up shooting only a combined 3 under on Saturday/Sunday to finish at 11 under par and in a tie for 31st place. One item of note. This week marked the first time since Q-School that Tryon played all four rounds under par on the PGA Tour (or any other tour for that matter).

THINGS ARE STILL GOING WELL FOR TRYON on day 2. Because of some bad weather, he wasn't able to get his 2nd round complete, but he's currently 2 under thru his first six holes and 7 under par for the tournament.

FINALLY! A SOLID START FOR TRYON in the BC Open. 8 birdies and no big numbers turned into a nice little 67 and a tie for 6th place after round 1. It'll be interesting to see how well he plays today considering the different type of pressure he now faces. He hasn't fared too well under the pressure of making the cut, but (granted, in limited opportunities) he has played very solid when he has gotten himself near the leaders. Here's some interview excerpts from after Ty's round: This feels a lot better now," said Tryon, comparing this year's opening round to that of 2001. "It's been a learning experience this year. I just haven't played up to my level of ability, but today I just got out of my own way, just relaxed and hit it real good."
Tryon admits his health still isn't 100 percent, which combined with the pressure of playing well enough to keep his playing privileges on the PGA Tour, has been a hindrance in his performance.
"I just haven't been the same," Tryon said. "I'm just trying to catch up physically. This is the time of your life when you're 18 or 19, you want to be healthy. It's been depressing.
"I feel like I'm getting better, but mentally I couldn't play golf the way I (wanted)."
"Two years ago as an amateur, I just played and I didn't worry about anything," Tryon said. "I've been putting too much pressure on myself the last two years, but now I feel like I'm getting better. I feel like I'm getting to where I want to be."

THE 2ND ROUND OF THE WESTERN OPEN is nearly complete, and the only question still left is by how many will Tryon miss the cut by? After finishing near the bottom of the field on day 1, Ty opened round 2 with bogies on 6 of his 1st 7 holes and currently sits ahead of only Mike Heinen and Marty Schiene. Thru 12 holes in round 2, PGA Tour stats show that Tryon has already taken 27 putts - lets all hope thats a misprint.

1ST ROUND OF THE WESTERN OPEN is finished for Tryon, and its another poor start. Two birdies, three bogies and a triple leave Ty with a four over par 76 - ahead of only five players in the field. He'll need a 68 or better tomorrow to have a shot at making the cut.

TY TAKES TIGER'S SIDE IN the battle over whether to test drivers for C.O.R. compliance on the PGA Tour. While nobody has as of yet pointed the finger at any specific players, or even said un-named players are knowingly using non-conforming drivers, there is a growing trend on tour to accept the idea of testing. Well, I stand corrected. Tiger is now saying he knows of one specific player using a 'hot' driver - and he's confronted him about it. This could get exponentially nastier than the old square grooves fight ever got.
