IN AN INTERVIEW WITH TRYON PRIOR to beginning play at last week's Deutche Bank SAP Open in Germany, he openly admitted to under-estimating the level of competition on the PGA Tour. However, he still thinks turning pro was worth it.

TAKING HIS GAME TO A DIFFERENT CONTINENT, against totally different competition doesn't seem to have help Tryon's woes any. He fired a 2 over par 74 in his second round and finished closer to last (126th place) than he did to the cut line. What little confidence he may have gained after his strong showing at the Bay Hill Invitational must surely be completely eroded at this point.

ROUND 1 IS UNDERWAY IN GERMANY. TY HAS only played 11 holes, and it currently at 1 over par. If you want, you can follow the live scoring for the event, or just watch Tryon's scorecard. UPDATE: Ty finished up with an even par round of 72, and is currently in a tie for 69th place, 7 shots back of the leaders. He'll probably need a 71 or 72 tomorrow to make the cut.

ITS STILL AN 'AGE THING' FOR TY on the PGA Tour. At the Wachovia Championship, all the players received free Mercedes Benz courtesy cars - everybody except Tryon [ alt link]. Seems there is a minimum age of 21 for getting your hands on a free Mercedes in Charlotte. It wasn't much of a problem for Ty though, he ended up with a Rolls Royce instead - courtesy of a member of the Quail Hollow golf club that heard about his plight.

A DOUBLE BOGEY ON HIS THIRD HOLE has Tryon four back of the cut line currently. This isn't the type of start that usually leads to a score in the 60's. UPDATE: Four birdies in round 2 were not enough to offset two double bogies as Ty finished with another 75 - missing the cut by 5 shots. Next week, he's playing in the Deutsche Bank SAP Open in Germany. One oddity about the Deutsche Bank is that their website has a 'top player' page dedicated to Tryon. It just seems kind of silly considering the world ranking they show for him - 1239.

ANOTHER SLOW START FOR TRYON as he finds himself in a tie for 111th place at 3 over after the 1st round after making only a single birdie. Right now, the projected cut is 1 over par, but that'll likely move to Even by mid-day tomorrow. All this means that Ty needs to at least get it into the 60's on Friday- something he's done only 5 times in 8 PGA Tour starts this year. There hasn't been much written about Ty since Bay Hill, but the local New Orleans paper - The Times-Picayune - did write a pretty long piece about him during the run-up to the HP event there last week. The article included a couple of interesting quotes: From Scott Hoch: "I was against him turning pro, and obviously it hasn't worked out for him. I think he's missing out on a lot of fun he would've been having, and a golf career's long enough that you have plenty of time out there. You don't have to rush it."From David Ledbetter: "Everybody's looking at the current results. What we're looking at is what he's going to do three or four years down the road. It's a learning period."And finally, from Ty's father: "The good news about Ty is he's got an upside and a lot of room to improve. A lot of guys out here in their 30s, there's not a lot of room to improve after they've been beating their heads against the wall for 15 years. This is Ty's time to beat his head against the wall."

ROUND 2 IS LOOKING MUCH BETTER FOR Tryon. He's currently 4 under thru 7 holes on his 2nd round and sits at 2 under par for the tournament. The current cut line is at 3 under, but will probably move to 4 before the end of the day. UPDATE: A better score, but the same result for Ty in New Orleans. Ty made 7 birdies in his 2nd round and finished with a 68 to put him at 2 under for the tournament. But, like predicted, the cut line is going to be 4 under so Ty will be going home early again. His next confirmed event is the Capital Open at Avenel (formerly the Kemper Open) beginning June 5th. UPDATE #2: Thanks to Maria, I now know that his next confirmed event is the Wachovia next week in North Carolina.

TRYON IS PLAYING DOWN IN New Orleans this week, and unfortunately he's off to another typical Tryon-like start - a 2 over par 74 and a tie for 136th place. Of the entire field of 156, Ty beat exactly 10 guys. Guys with names like Zyroll and Narro and Marchand. I don't mean to be negative, but he's rapidly running out of events in which to earn the half-million dollars plus that he needs to retain his tour card. Off Topic: If you enjoy the style of this site, I've also created a similar site that deals with Bret Easton Ellis.
