NOT EVEN A FOUR UNDER PAR BACK nine could get Ty to the weekend after he opened with a 39 over his first nine holes. He ended up 1 over par for the tournament, and
1 shot shy of making the cut.
I've also added four more tournaments to Ty's schedule at the left. Beyond those, I've also heard rumors that he's been extended an invitation to the Colonial in May - the tournament that Annika Sorenstam has committed to playing. Getting beaten by a girl (even a very good one) would be quite a topper to Ty's continued poor play.

THE 1ST ROUND OF THE CHRYSLER CLASSIC OF Tucson is in the books, and despite
the positive attitude of Ty prior to the round, we ended up with just more of the same bad play - a two over par 74 and a tie for 104th place. Two early birdies, and 6 total for the round (including all of the par 5's), were overshadowed by a triple and a double bogey on the back 9. [thanks to
dbastron for that link]
Despite the over par score on day 1, I'm left with a bit of hope that Tryon can make this cut. He only needs to shoot a 69 or 70 tomorrow to get thru to the weekend, and his general quality of play seems good enough to accomplish that. Its a much more difficult task for a player to start making birdies after a dry stretch than it is to eliminate the 'big numbers' that plagued Ty's first round.

TRYON IS IN THE FIELD THIS WEEK AT THE PGA event in Tucson, and PGATour.com has a
big article about Ty 'seeking a breakthrough' this week.
"The course is really set up good for longer hitters, like young players," Tryon said Wednesday, "because a lot of par 5s are reachable. I love the course a lot. It surprised me. It's not what I thought it would be. I thought it would be like a desert course." For Ty's sake, I hope that liking the course translates into liking his scorecard at the end of the day.

WELL, I GUESS I SPOKE TOO SOON in my previous entry. As is being discussed in the comments section by a couple of people,
Tryon is no longer listed in the field for the Buick Invitational - alternate or otherwise. Since we don't know for sure, and Ty's website is of no help (what else is new), I can only speculate that he's simply withdrawn due to his poor play of late.
Remember, Ty has a limited number of events this year in which to retain his card since he's on a medical exemption - he's not allowed to enter 30-35 events. Given that, if he thinks he's in a slump (I'd agree), its probably better to work that out back home on the range than on the course, effectively wasting one of his entries.
Also, I'd expect that we won't see Ty in too many more 'top-notch' events (read: wherever Tiger plays) this year. It simply doesn't make sense for him to enter tournaments with super strong fields. He's better off playing in the BC Open, Tuscon, Greater Milwaukee type events that have weak fields but still fat purses.
Again, I don't know this for sure, but if one of Ty's handlers wants to email me (I know you read this site IMG) to get the story straight - I'd be more than happy to publish your response.

IT LOOKS LIKE TY HAS MOVED UP TO the 1st alternate position in
today's field information. I'd say that bodes pretty well for him getting to tee off on Thursday.

PERHAPS I WAS A BIT TOO OPTIMISTIC yesterday when I said that it could only get better from here - because it got worse. Ty followed up his 80-78 start with a horrid 79; bringing his three day total to a whopping 21 over par - finishing ahead of only one player - the 80 year old Roger Maltbie.
Golf Digest also had some
not-so encouraging words for Ty after his showing at the AT&T:
"After spending time with Ty Tryon at this week's AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am two things are clear: He has a textbook swing; and mentally he's not on the same page."

TY PROBABLY DIDN'T THINK IT COULD get any worse for him after yesterday's opening 80. But after a
stinker of a 78 today, he actually dropped three places in the standings. He's currently only beating 5 other players. Five. And that includes the 80 year old announcer Roger Maltbie who shouldn't really count. Its so bad for Ty right now, that he's made more double bogies (2) than he has birdies (1); and he has as many triple bogies (1) as eagles (1).
Thru two rounds, he currently ranks 145th (of 178) in 'putts per round' and 139th in 'greens in regulation'. There probably isn't a worse combination of statistics than that.
The good news - and there is always good news - is that it really can't go anywhere but up from here.

ITS BARELY EVEN WORTH MENTIONING at this point, but
Ty opened up with a big fat 80 at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro Am. Two more days and he'll almost surely miss the cut yet again.
