I'M SURE ITS BAD ENOUGH FOR TRYON that he's playing badly, but when you the fans start thinking that you are Aaron Baddeley, its got to make it worse. Not only does Ty have to walk around knowing he's playing the worst golf of all the young guns on tour, but now he has be be reminded of it by fans mistakenly congratulating him on his great play (Baddeley finished 2nd at the Sony Open this year). Ouch.

Ty also had some comments on his recent form at the Phoenix Open: "I totally feel different out here," Tryon said. "I feel like I'm more prepared . . . It's not frustrating, because I know when I get it going I'm going to go low. Right now I'm just trying to play what I call vanilla golf. Hit the fairways and greens and give myself a chance." From the results so far this year, he may be playing too conservatively for his own good.

ANOTHER MISSED CUT FOR Tryon at the Phoenix Open. In an event known for low scoring, and where the leaders are 13 under par after two rounds, Ty made a measly five birdies before being dismissed for the weekend. At this point, he's got to be seriously worried about whether he'll be able to retain his tour card after this season. More later...

ANOTHER LOST OPPORTUNITY. NEEDING only to play even par golf to make the cut after opening with three straight birdies in his second round, Ty promptly makes bogey on 6 of his next 12 holes. Not even a birdie-eagle finish was enough to recover from that stretch of holes - and despite a 1-under par 69 on Thursday, Tryon falls 2 shots short of the weekend.

Also, here's the story about Tryon being in the Footjoy 'Sign-Boy' commercials that Dayne mentioned in the comments section of a previous entry.

MEET THE NEW TY TRYON, SAME as the old Ty Tryon? After opening his round with consecutive double bogies Ty makes six birdies [most in the field on Thursday] but still only manages a 3 over par 73, and a tie for 114th place. He'll likely need a 67 or better on Thursday to make the cut.

JUST A QUICK HEADS UP - Ty tees off at the Sony Open in Hawaii tomorrow at 8:50am local time along with Jason Gore and Taichiro Kiyota. I'm a little rushed for time right now, so I'm not sure how that converts to times here on the mainland.

Also, here's a short personality piece about Ty in the local Honolulu paper talking about how popular he is this week.

SCOTT BROWN HAS ISSUED SOME predictions for the 2003 PGA Tour. Item number nine says that Ty Tryon is at least a year away from making a major impact on the Tour. Tryon played just 14 professional rounds last year and broke 70 just one time. His parents have gone to great length to set up various safety nets around him. But he'll probably need a year of experience to really get acclimated to life on the cutthroat Tour. I think if Brown is referring to Tryon making a consistent impact on tour - he's correct; but I do think that week to week Tryon is currently playing well enough to spend some considerable time on leaderboards in the 2nd tier events on Tour.

Also, Scott Ostler from the SF Gate makes the following astute observation about young athletes turning professional: LeBron James, meet Shannon Uske. Shannon is a 16-year-old apprentice jockey who rode her first winner last week at Calder in Miami. I've got it figured out. When guys skip college to turn pro (James, golfer Ty Tryon), the public wrings its hands at the corruption of youth. When it's a girl (gymnastics, skating, etc.), it's cute.
