March 13, 2003

SOMETHING WE HAVEN'T SEEN OUT OF Ty in a while is actually happening right now - a good start. Tryon is currently 2-under par thru 15 holes (T62nd) - with play suspended for the rest of the day. He's got a long way to go to make the leaderboard as 3 players already shot 9-under par 63's this morning. But, if conditions stay as they currently are, he is well within striking distance of the likely cut line of around 3 or 4 under par.

A couple of encouraging signs from Ty's first day - none of his 4 birdies have come on the par 5's, so he's not getting 'cheapies'. And secondly, his driving accuracy is much improved (75%) from his previous events this year.

You have to believe this is the week Ty is going to make the cut. Hopefully this will be the start of good things to come.

How much money does Ty have to make to regain his tour card for next year?

It's completely variable. To regain your card for the following year, you need to finish in the top 125 on the money list (or win, or get a medical exemption like Ty did for this season, or a few other reasons too long to go into here - email me if you really want to know.) Last year, Jay Williamson was the bubbleboy - at $515,445. The year before that, it was Woody Austin at $406,352. So for Ty to crack the top 125, he'll probably need at least $550K and more like around $600,000...

Actually, because of his medical exemption status, Ty has 23 events in which to earn what Mr 125, Jay Williamson, did last year - $515,445. Although he could make it with less earnings on the off-chance that something less would get him in the Top 125 in 2003.

Here's my original post on the subject back when his medical exemption was announced.
