OH SO CLOSE. LEADING THE ADT Golf Skills Challenge coming into today's second half, Ty struggled early before winning both the fairway bunker and chip shot contests to vault back into first place going into the final Golf For Dummiesevent. He then promptly finished next to last in that final event, the short iron, and was left tied with Matt Kuchar for first place. The 1 shot play-off (short iron again) put Kuchar over the top as Tryon's shot finished a miniscule two inches outside Kuchar's.

AFTER THE FIRST OF TWO DAYS, Tryon leads the way at the ADT Skills Challenge in Boca Raton, Florida. He won the long-drive, took 8th in the mid-iron, 5th in the bunker shot, and 2nd in the short wedge over water contest. Thru today, he's pocketed $26,000 for his efforts. Just for comparison, he's won all of $19,812 on the various world tours during 2002. The rest of the event airs tomorrow on NBC from 3-5PM Central time.

DESPITE HIS POOR PLAY THIS YEAR, much of which was likely caused by his mono, Tryon gets placed 53rd on the Golf Digest Top 100 Newsmakers of 2002 list. Just for reference, he was 14th on the list last year after becoming the youngest player ever to qualify for a PGA Tour card.

THE 'ADT SKILLS CHALLENGE' THAT TRYON participated in is scheduled to air the 28th and 29th on NBC. As a result, the Star-Ledger made Ty the subject of their Sunday Q&A.

I also found an article about the video shoot with Ty and Notah Begay for the Tiger Woods 2003 video game. Using Velcro and tape, 44 reflective markers which look like small studs are hung on the black body suit stretched over the 18-year-old golf phenomenon's muscular body. Add a pair of clear glasses and Tryon looks like Tom Cruise in Mission Impossible. "It's a little tight, kind of restricting," he says, pulling at the suit's neck. "Now I know how girls feel in their clothes." If anybody has a screenshot of what Tryon looks like in the game, send it my way.

TY MANAGED TO FINISH STRONG WITH A 2-under par final round of 70. The round, which began with 2 bogeys and included 5 birdies, moved Tryon up to a tie for 24th place - his best finish in a tournament since last years Q-School. This ought to be a good confidence builder and springboard him to a solid start to the 2003 season.

TWO STEPS FORWARD, ONE STEP BACK. After yesterdays fine round, Tryon opens with a double bogey on the first hole and manages only three birdies on the first day of the tournament when the weather actually cooperated. He finished the day with a 74, and fell back into a tie for 35th place.

At this point, he's too far behind to challenge for the title, so a top 15 or top 20 finish has to be his goal now. You can check out the whole leaderboard here.

TRYON FIRES A 2ND ROUND 71 ON A DAY when only ten players managed to break par. In a round that 6 birdies, 2 bogeys and a double he managed to move up 23 spots in the field into a tie for 10th place. With 64 putts over his two rounds so far, Ty is still going to need to roll the ball better on the greens if he's to have a chance at catching the leaders this weekend.

THE 1ST ROUND IS COMPLETE DOWN UNDER at the Australian Masters and the scores are high because of some pretty bad weather conditions. "I didn't know you had hurricanes in Australia," said Ty Tryon, the 18-year-old American who is here for the first time.

Ty managed 5 birdies on the tough day and salvaged an opening 2-over par 74. It may not sound so hot, but on a day when only 10 players broke par - Ty is still in good shape.

AFTER THE 3RD ROUND OF THE CASIO World Open was washed out by rain, Ty finished up with a disappointing 74. The 2-over par final round put Tryon back to even par for the tournament and slotted him in a tie for 42nd place. The amount of prize money Ty was awarded was not immediately available.
