TRYON TURNS 18 YEARS OLD ON SUNDAY, and officially becomes a full member of the PGA Tour. Not that he'll be playing much golf in the month of June - he's still recovering from mono. And once that clears up he'll need to get his tonsils taken out. He didn't try to qualify for the US Open because of his health, and I haven't seen anything mentioned about trying to qualify for the British Open either. It also doesn't look like Ty will be able to meet the qualification criteria for the PGA Championship this fall at Hazeltine - he'll either need to win or get a special invite to make the field.

IN AN ARTICLE ABOUT THE CURRENT state of affairs on the PGA Tour, the final question is whether it was a good idea for Tryon to turn professional. Not much to complain about in their answer: It's too soon to pass judgment on Tryon. He hasn't made a cut in four starts, but he has had health problems. Other young stars who played in college first, such as Charles Howell and David Gossett, have been more competitive. But judging by his attitude, a long and successful career seems likely.

TRYON IS MENTIONED BRIEFLY IN THIS Memorial Tournament run-up article about the seeminly sudden surge of talent younger than Tiger Woods on tour.
