WHEN YOU'VE BEEN OFF THE TOUR since spring with an illness, no news is bad news, but bad news is even worse [thanks Todd]. Jay Danzi (Ty's agent) had this to say at the PGA Championship (he's there, Ty's not): There's nothing really new to report. We're still trying to get him well so he can go out and sort of start over." I'm beginning to wonder if we'll see much of Tryon the rest of this year at all - and it may not be that he's sick.

Follow along here. The original statements that he'd be back in action by the end of July were made in mid June (here being the 1st mention I could find). After those statements, the tour granted him a medical exemption on July 5th giving him 23 tournaments over the rest of this year and next to earn about $450,000 to keep his card. I'm thinking this delayed return isn't due to sickness at all, but rather a calculated move to get Tryon into the weakest field tournaments possible where he's most likely to cash a big check.

Beginning next week, there is a string of 2nd tier events: Reno is being played opposite a World Golf Championship event, Tampa is opposite another World Golf Championship event, Texas is opposite the Ryder Cup, and then the Southern Farm is opposite the Tour Championship.

If he skips Reno, I'd say he's truly still struggling with the mono. If he shows up, then the past month of down time was probably a calculated move to give him the best chance of retaining his card.

Golf World is reporting that Ty was invited to participate in the Skills Challenge. If this is true we will finally be able to see if Ty has recovered from his medical problems.
