SOMEWHAT SUPRISINGLY, TONY KORNHEISER'S most recent column is not only all about Tryon, but he actually thinks its a good idea that Ty turned pro at such a young age. Tony makes an interesting comparison between the treatment of Ty's decision and that of 'musical prodigies' like Van Cliburn. Prodigies in the arts are always easier to appreciate and defend because they've given us beauty. But I'd also argue we're better off for Chris Evert playing tennis, and Wayne Gretzky playing hockey. They were teenagers when they arrived fully blown on the world's stage. Their genius was obvious. Same for Kobe Bryant and Sergio Garcia. At a tender age they were ready. I suspect, the better Tryon does next year, the more articles like this one we'll see. If he happens to struggle - well, just get ready for the Scott Hoch quotes.
