TRYON PLAYED AT THE Ocala Open this past week, and despite a decent first couple days (5 under), he had a bad final round to finish 16th in 57th place (the Ocala Open website incorrectly calculated his position due to the many ties above him - thanks Ken).

TRYON STILL MAKING NEWS, but I'm not sure a 4th place pro-am finish in the Ocala Open is the news coverage he thought he'd be generating at this point in his career.

TRYON IS PLAYING the 1st Stage of Q-School in Alabama this week.

He opened with rounds of 71-77 and is in 43rd position, 4 shots outside the cut line.

TY SURE GETS ALOT of press coverage for a guy who has (thus far) failed as a golfer. The Palm Beach Post's most recent is Aiming for another shot.
On the Gateway Tour this year, Tryon has made three of 21 cuts since January, none since February. A 69 Tuesday matched his best round of the year but still left him well off the cut line. "I'm not playing too good," Tryon said, "not getting good results. But I'm getting better. I'm just struggling with my putter and making big numbers every round. "I'll get back (to the PGA Tour) eventually. I know I will. If it's not this year, it'll be next year. I definitely have a lot more stability in my life now. I feel better about it in general, just being a pro golfer."
His quotes here are good news. Everything is pretty upbeat and he doesn't sound like a guy ready to quit.
A former student at the David Leadbetter Academy, Tryon now goes it alone, without a swing coach. He's currently inspired by Ben Hogan's book, Five Lessons. "I love it," he said.

IS TAD FUJIKAWA repeating Ty Tryon's mistake by turning pro at age 16? This kid has less game than Tryon had at the time he turned pro - which means this is either another disaster waiting to happen, or it'll work out just fine since its a very different situation.

FROM THE VANCUVER SUN, The sad saga of golf phenom Tryon.
He's become a poster child of what not to do to a young, aspiring athlete who clearly isn't ready for prime time.

So What Happened To Ty Tryon?

Not much we didn't already know, but its always interesting to see his name pop up in the media.

STAGE 2 OF Q-SCHOOL SURE ended ugly for Ty this year. He finishes the week with rounds of 77-74-76-78 for a +17 total. He needed -10 to advance to the next round.

This poor finish means that Ty will likely continue to play in obscurity overseas, or perhaps he'll take a crack at the Canadian Tour.

NOT LOOKING SO GOOD for Ty in the 2nd stage of the Q-School. Thru 2 days, he's at 7-over, in last place, and 12 shots away from advancing to the next stage.

A 3rd round 76 drops Ty further back - 18 shots off of the pace needed to advance.

TY IS DOING WELL in the 1st Stage of Q-School so far. He's 3 under after 2 days and sits in a tie for 10th place. The top 25 & ties advance. [thanks to Brad for the link]

UPDATE: Ty finished up with 73-71 and finished in T12 - advancing to the next stage of qualifying.

THANKS TO HUEY FOR SENDING IN this Korean article about Tryon playing on the Asian Tour (its in English). The article was written back in May when Ty played in the same event as Michelle Wie.
Tryon is now missing more than his share of fairways and greens, not to mention cuts. Last week, he shot 82-74, missing the cut by 12 strokes - and 17 shots behind Wie. More telling was his general lackadaisical attitude. In the first round, on the par-5 third hole, Tryon pulled his tee shot, and it landed among rocks. He just shrugged, and told his fiance not to worry. He went on to bogey the hole. That could have been the sign that either he had his emotions under control or, quite simply, he didn't care.

SOME RARE personal news about Ty Tryon.
Former Orlando phenom Ty Tryon, the youngest player ever to earn a PGA Tour card, is planning to get married soon and expects to become a father in mid-September.

CONTINUED high scores from Ty as he struggles in Korea. In the SBS Meritz Solmoro Open he shot 70-76-86-79. He made the cut, but finished 2nd to last.

In the Pocari Enerzen Open , he missed the cut, shooting 72-82.

Similar result in the SBS Kumho Asiana Open, with a 77-81 to miss the cut again.

TRYON FINALLY HAS A BIO page up at the Korean PGA Tour website. You can see it here. But as Mike pointed out in the comments to a previous entry, brace yourself for Ty's bio picture.

I'm not quite sure whats going on with his long hair and the porn star mustache. He kind of looks like the main character in the CBS tv show Numb3rs.

Also of note, is that the Korean PGA Tour apparently thinks its important that we all know as much about their players as possible - how else to explain why they list Blood Type as one of the bio items.

TY PLAYED IN THE SK TELECOM event on the Asian PGA Tour this week - the same event that Michelle Wie is playing in. Ty shot 82-74 to miss the cut by 12 shots. Playing from the same tees, Michelle Wie shot 70-69 and is in 17th place with 2 days left.

PLAY HAS BEGUN AT THE 2nd round of this year's PGA Tour Q-School, and Tryon shot even-par 72. He sits in 39th place with 3 rounds to go and must get into the top 18 to advance.

18th place is currently at 3-under par.

UPDATE: A 2nd round 74 drops Tryon back further from the 'cut' line. He is now 7 shots off the pace needed to advance to the next round of Q-School.

UPDATE #2: 74-73 over the final 2 rounds end Ty's hopes of earning back his PGA Tour card for 2006. This is also a poor enough finish that he probably won't have much (if any) status on the Nationwide Tour for 2006 either.

TRYON STARTS PLAY at the Q-School this week. He shot 3 under par in the 1st round and must finish inside the top 17 to advance.

Ty finishes up with a 73-68-71 to finish T10 and advances to the next round of Q-School.

ITS BEEN A LONG TIME since I've seen a profile piece on Ty Tryon (need a login?). This one talks about what its been like for him over the past couple of years and says he's been mostly practicing for the Q-School this fall rather than playing in tournaments.
"I think (the expectations) got in the way a little bit," Tryon said. "I did something that was so different, and there was really no path to follow. But I'm glad I got a taste of it."

Tryon said he has no regrets about turning pro when he did - he hadn't planned on attending college anyway.

"Life throws you curveballs," he said. "My game is so much better now. I just haven't quite hit that zone at the PGA Tour level like I did. But I will. I will again."
