Why The Middle East Is Backwards

This whole mess about the Muhammad cartoons in Europe is quite illustrative of the problems in the Middle East today.
The furor over the drawings, which first ran in a Danish paper in September, cuts to the question of which is more sacred in the Western world - freedom of expression or respect for religious beliefs.
Am I supposed to take that question seriously? What if the religious belief is that for women to speak is an offense against god? Do we bow down to that also so that we don't make anyone angry? They can just get over it.

I hope it doesn't happen, but if a Euro gets kidnapped by one of these wackos, the appropriate response would be to run another cartoon in the newspapers with Muhammad being drawn in as the kidnapper.
