Our Horrible Children
School administrators just keep getting dumber every day.
Large numbers of Michigan schools are adopting a look-a-like zero-tolerance policy whereby if your behavior looks like its against the rules, then it is against the rules. The idea was kick-started because of some 5th graders selling 'happy powder' that turned out to be Kool-Aid, Jell-O and sugar in plastic bags. The problem lies here: The district doesn't send out questionable substances for testing, he said. If it looks like a drug, the district assumes it is, he said. This has got to be a civil rights violation. They assume the item you have is contraband with no evidence, and no due process? Parrish said the district was particularly concerned about students ingesting unknown substances. Well, the obvious answer to that is to test the damn substances so that you know what they are.
Next year ought to be quite a hoot for me. Our daughter starts Kindergarten in the fall, and I just can't wait to see some of the memo's that get sent home with her. I fully expect to have to fight thru a stupid ZT issue like this at some point in her school years - but no worries - I'm well prepared. :)
